The Break – Margaret River – Gracetown

Last week we were 250km south of Perth enjoying the wonderful scenery and wildflowers on the Cape to Cape walking track. This 130km track connects Cape Naturaliste with Cape Leeuwin and encompasses all of the Margaret River wine region.

Because we have just finished reading The Break we made a quick side trip to Gracetown, which is called Greys Bay in the book. This is where the book’s main characters, Rosie and Cray, go to live when they escape the rat race in Perth for the laid back lifestyle down south. Cray surfs every day in the bay and eventually Rosie too learns to surf there too.

Like Leighton Beach in Perth, Gracetown too has its dark side. An actual natural disaster that occurred there in the 1990s is the basis of the climax of The Break.
