It’s exciting when one comes across a new novelist who has set part of her book in your own neighbourhood. Deb Fitzpatrick lives in Fremantle, WA and has just published her first adult novel, although she is already a successful writer of stories for children and young adults.
Called The Break and set in the southwest of Western Australia, the style of writing owes something to Tim Winton and Robert Drewe.
The novel is mostly set in the Margaret River area, but begins at Leighton Beach in North Fremantle and just a hop and a skip from where we live. Without giving away too much of the plot, a young couple leave their city lifestyle and good secure jobs for a more tenuous future down south. Their decision to leave the city is partly connected to events at Leighton Beach.
